Methods for Cultivating Chinese Roses
Light. Chinese roses are tolerant to sunlight, requiring some shading during the high-temperature summer months, but can otherwise be exposed to full sun in other seasons, ensuring at least 5 hours of sunlight daily. However, this depends on the variety, as some flowers are not tolerant to direct sunlight and need appropriate shading to extend their blooming period.
Watering. Chinese roses should be watered according to the principle of "no watering when not dry, water thoroughly when dry." If the top 2 cm of the soil surface is completely dry, it indicates a lack of water. It's best to water in the morning, as watering at night can leave residual moisture that doesn't evaporate in time, leading to diseases and pests.
The frequency of watering Chinese roses should be adjusted according to the season. In spring and autumn, water approximately once every 5 to 7 days. In summer, water twice a day, in the morning and evening. In winter, when growth is slow, water about once every 10 to 15 days.
Fertilization. In addition to the base fertilizer in the soil, Chinese roses also need to be fertilized during growth to supplement nutrients. In spring, when they start to sprout, use a nitrogen-rich compound fertilizer. Chinese roses have a long blooming period and require a lot of nutrients, so usually, every 10 days before blooming, apply a well-rotted soybean cake fertilizer and spray a dilute potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the leaves. Stop fertilizing when the flower buds show color.
How to Care for Chinese Roses
Soil. The soil should be loose with good internal structure and a pH value between 5.6 and 7.2, which is very beneficial for root growth. A mixture of 2 parts decomposed leaf soil + 2 parts perlite + 1 part fine sand can be used, with a small amount of base fertilizer added to increase soil fertility.
Temperature. The optimal growth temperature is around 22-25°C. When the temperature exceeds 35°C, methods such as spraying water and ventilating can be used to lower the temperature. In winter, the temperature should not drop below 5°C to prevent frost damage.
Precautions for Chinese Roses
1. Regular pruning is needed for Chinese roses. When new shoots grow to 15-20 cm, cut off the top 3 cm. Side branches that have reached a certain length should continue to be pinched back. Remove spent flowers promptly after blooming to promote the growth of new branches.
