What to do after the spring Chinese roses fade
This article introduces knowledge about green plants and flowers, including how to deal with fading Chinese roses in spring and detailed introduction of the continuous care methods for blooming Chinese roses.
Spring is the most vigorous growing season for Chinese roses. In early spring, Chinese roses, which have been dormant throughout the winter, awaken and gradually sprout new buds on the branches. These new buds grow into new leaves and bloom beautiful flowers at the top of the new branches. After the first wave of spring Chinese rose flowers fade, it is essential to do three things to help them quickly recover their vitality and bloom the second and third waves of flowers.
1. Trim the spent flowers in time
Chinese roses produce the most flowers in spring, even the lazy-flowering varieties can bloom a large number of flowers. Chinese roses are also very tolerant to pruning, requiring occasional pruning for shaping from the seedling stage. After the first wave of spring flowers fades, it is necessary to trim the spent flowers promptly. If the spent flowers remain on the branches, they will continuously consume the nutrients of the plant, hindering leaf growth and the development of subsequent flower buds. Moreover, over time, spent flowers can become moldy, significantly increasing the probability of the plant getting infected with bacteria and becoming ill.
When pruning, do not just trim the spent flowers, but also cut from 2-3 pairs of leaves below the spent flowers, removing the spent flower and a section of the branch below it. This pruning can induce the buds below the flower branches to continue growing, and after the lateral branches grow out, they can continue to bloom the second wave of flowers.
2. Supplement fertilizers
Budding and blooming consume a lot of nutrients from Chinese roses. After the first wave of flowers, the plants are generally in a state of nutritional deficiency and require timely fertilization to replenish nutrients. After pruning, the side buds on the branches need to regrow, so it is recommended to use a balanced fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. If using solid fertilizers like decomposed cow or sheep dung, compound fertilizer, or chicken manure, a small amount can be buried in the soil or sprinkled on the soil surface, once a month; if using liquid fertilizers like Huaduo No.1 or All-purpose Plant Nutrition Liquid, prepare the fertilizer solution according to the instructions and water the roots, once every 7-10 days.

After a period of growth, the top of the lateral branches will develop the second wave of flower buds, at which point we should start using bloom-boosting fertilizers. Use a bloom-boosting liquid fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium content, such as Huaduo No.2 or Monopotassium Phosphate. For example, with Monopotassium Phosphate, dilute it in water according to the instructions to make a fertilizer solution, and water the roots of the Chinese roses and spray the branches and leaves (being careful not to get the flower buds wet). Use once every 7-10 days, continuously until the flowers bloom.
3. Supplement sunlight
In addition to supplementing nutrients, increasing sunlight to replenish energy is also very important. Chinese roses are typical sun-loving plants and do not need to be shaded even in summer. The processes of branching, bud differentiation, and flower bud development in spring require a lot of energy, so allowing Chinese roses to get plenty of sun is beneficial for leaf growth and flowering. If possible, move the flower pot outdoors for maintenance, where there is good lighting and ventilation; if conditions are limited and indoor planting is necessary, place the pot in a sunny balcony, trying to maintain at least 5 hours of direct sunlight every day.
