Why does the cyclamen die after blooming
The editor introduces why the cyclamen dies after blooming and the introduction of green plant flowers for the maintenance after cyclamen blooming. Let's take a look together.
Although cyclamen is also planted with bulbs, its blooming period is much longer than that of lilies and hyacinths. When the old flowers fade, the new flowers will bloom, and proper maintenance can make them bloom for up to five months. Therefore, some cyclamen bloom from the end of the previous year and can continue to bloom until April or May of the following year when the weather gets hot. But why do some cyclamen have a short blooming period, stop blooming after one or two months, and even their leaves turn yellow and dry up? How should cyclamen be maintained after this?
The short blooming period of cyclamen is roughly divided into two reasons. One is due to improper maintenance, such as insufficient temperature, humidity, fertilization, and lighting, which leads to a shortened blooming period and no differentiation of flower buds. The other reason is that the bulbs are small with limited nutrient reserves and weak ability to differentiate flower buds, resulting in less flowering and shorter blooming time than larger bulbs. Therefore, if you want cyclamen to bloom for a long time, choose plump and larger bulbs, maintain them in a cool place with sufficient lighting, high humidity, light and frequent fertilization, and regular watering.
If in a relatively cool environment, cyclamen not only has a short blooming period but also the leaves turn yellow and dry up after blooming, it is mostly due to root problems, either root rot or bulb necrosis, which requires checking after taking it out of the pot. If it's root rot, cut off the rotten part, disinfect and then rebury the bulb in healthy soil, keeping the potting soil moist for continuous growth. If it's bulb rot, there's no saving it and it should be thrown away. Actually, in this case, the short blooming period of cyclamen is not because the blooming period is truly over, but because the roots and bulbs have deteriorated and can no longer support it to continue blooming.
If in a higher temperature environment, such as consistently above 28 degrees, cyclamen leaves turn yellow and dry up after blooming, it might be dormant. Clean up the dry leaves, place it in a cool and well-ventilated area, keep the potting soil moist to help it through the dormancy period, and it will be able to sprout again in the fall, preparing for blooming. However, normally growing cyclamen usually starts to turn yellow in May and June, and the temperature in most areas in spring is maintained at about 10-20 degrees, so cyclamen will not go dormant due to high temperature.
Thus, if the cyclamen at home not only stops blooming but also has yellowing and drying leaves at this time, it is likely due to root rot or bulb rot, which requires checking after taking it out of the pot. The most fundamental reason for the root or bulb rot of cyclamen is excessive watering and poor ventilation. Cyclamen prefers a moist environment, but watering should be done when the soil is dry and not too wet. Also, the cyclamen bulb should not be completely buried in the soil, leaving one-third to one-quarter exposed to prevent bulb rot. If the cyclamen bulb at home is fully buried, you can remove a little soil from the top of the pot.
