Hydrangea开花时间 and cultivation methods and management of Hydrangea.

When do hydrangeas bloom?

If you want to know when hydrangeas bloom and the introduction of green plant flowers, including cultivation methods and management, let's take a look together!

Some people like to prune hydrangeas randomly, cutting off the flower buds that will bloom next year, and most hydrangeas bloom on old branches, which can lead to no flowers blooming the following year. There is also a situation where hydrangeas are still blooming or preparing to bloom in November. How should this be handled?

Tip:

The following refers to large hydrangeas, not oakleaf hydrangeas, panicled hydrangeas, or European hydrangeas. Everyone must make sure to distinguish them.

1. Why do they still bloom in November?

The blooming period of hydrangeas is mainly concentrated in the summer and autumn seasons. However, the temperature in this summer was too high, with the highest temperature in most regions reaching over 40 degrees Celsius. Hydrangeas do not like to bloom when the temperature is too high, so their blooming period is delayed by one or two months. This is why many hydrangea varieties are still blooming in November. This is especially true for varieties that bloom on both new and old branches, including the classic 'Endless Summer'.

Some flower friends have just bought greenhouse-grown hydrangeas, and it is normal to have flower buds when they receive them. They should also consider whether to keep the flowers based on the region.

The maintenance of hydrangeas should not be generalized. The climate in the north and south of our country is very different. You must make reasonable adjustments according to local climatic conditions to ensure normal growth and blooming of hydrangeas.

2. Northern regions

For example, by November, the temperature in many places north of the Yangtze River has already started to drop, especially the temperature at night, which is very low. Now, even if the top of the hydrangea has many differentiated flower buds or the flowers are about to open, it is not recommended to keep them. Just cut off all the flowers, keep all the leaves, and only remove the spent flowers.

When the hydrangea flowers fade, just cut off the spent flowers. If it is planted in the ground, leaving the spent flowers on the branches temporarily is fine.

The leaves of hydrangeas will naturally turn yellow and fall off when the temperature is low. The plump buds at the growth nodes, after the low temperature catalysis in winter, can bloom normally the following year.

When do hydrangeas bloom?

Carefully observe that there will be many bulging buds at the nodes of hydrangea branches. These are the branches that will bloom next year; don't cut them.

In the regions north of the Yangtze River, if the daytime temperature is still relatively warm, you can supplement some potassium dihydrogen phosphate in the morning for the hydrangeas, once every ten days, to ensure that the base of the hydrangea plant is better lignified and enhance their cold tolerance. Stop fertilizing when the daytime temperature drops to below 15 degrees Celsius. Do not give nitrogen fertilizer or fertilizers containing too much nitrogen, as this could lead to the germination of new buds and branches, which, before they are strong enough, would be quickly frostbitten by extremely low temperatures.

3. Central regions

If you are in places such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai south of the Yangtze River, where the daytime temperature is still relatively high, around 20-30 degrees, and the hydrangeas have just started to sprout flower buds, especially if they have just been bought and not been there for long, it is recommended to cut off these flower buds while keeping all the branches and leaves. Because the nighttime temperature in these places is relatively low, and it will cool down soon, these newly formed buds will not be able to bloom normally. Cutting them off in advance can reduce nutrient loss.

In the central region, as the temperature starts to drop, the leaves gradually change color, and the spent flowers are cut off, and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are supplemented.

If the hydrangeas in these places are almost fully open in November (the flower buds are full and the color starts to show), they can continue to be observed for a few more days, and the spent flowers can be cut off when the flowers are about to fade.

In daily maintenance, attention should be paid to supplementing phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, which can be supplemented once every 7-10 days. This is also to ensure that the branches lignify faster and enhance cold tolerance.

4. Southern regions

If you are in the southern regions of our country, such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Fujian, it is still relatively warm now, with the lowest nighttime temperature being around ten degrees. If there are sprouts, you can let them continue to bloom, and if they are blooming, wait until the flowers are finished before cutting off the spent flowers.
