How to care for Chinese roses after blooming?
Today, I will introduce to you the experience of caring for Chinese roses after blooming in terms of green plant maintenance. Below, the editor will answer your questions in detail.
The day before yesterday, while pruning the residual flowers of the climber Chinese roses, my husband kept asking, "Is this the end of the year? No more flowers?"
As a viewer, his question should also represent the thoughts of many new Chinese rose growers. Is it really once a year, and once a month? Of course not, their name is "Chinese rose," and the flowers are as beautiful as their name suggests. However, if you do nothing after the flowers, it's really possible there won't be any flowers to see.
Let's talk about what to do after the flowers to keep our Chinese roses blooming month after month.
Quick reblooming technique for Chinese roses
If you want Chinese roses to rebloom quickly, you should first prune after the flowers, cut off the残花 (residual flowers) and trim the branches. This has been introduced in previous articles. For more detailed pruning methods, please refer to the new book "How to Raise Chinese Roses from Scratch." If you only prune after the flowers, it cannot guarantee the reblooming of Chinese roses. The most important thing is still fertilizer and water.
Chinese roses have already consumed a lot when they bloom the first time, which is like we've just finished running 1000 meters and are completely exhausted. Pruning stimulates the Chinese roses to sprout new branches and prepare for the next bloom.
However, if the fertilizer and water cannot keep up, the new branches will become thin and weak, and many blind branches will appear, resulting in fewer reblooms and very small flowers.
How to care for Chinese roses after blooming?
Even if they can rebloom, Chinese roses have consumed too much energy and will become weak during the summer, making it easy to die in the hot weather. Therefore, after pruning, there are two very important things to do.
1. Timely top-dressing
After pruning, it is necessary to apply a top-dressing of fertilizer and water to help the Chinese roses recover quickly. You can use fast-acting water-soluble fertilizers, such as Huaduo No.1 or general growth nutrient solution. Note that the fertilization at this time is different from before. During the bud stage, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers were used, but after pruning, you should use growth fertilizers with more nitrogen to stimulate the rapid sprouting of new buds.
After applying the fast-acting fertilizer, it's not over yet. Pay attention to applying a long-acting fertilizer. Think about why our Chinese roses bloom so well in spring? Besides the suitable climate, most of the credit goes to the winter fertilizer, which is the long-acting fertilizer applied in winter, providing continuous nutrients for the Chinese roses, allowing them to bloom so vividly in spring.
