Why do the buds of the Chinese rose fall before they bloom?
This article explains the reasons why the buds of the Chinese rose fall before they bloom, related topics in flower cultivation, and provides a detailed introduction below.
Why do the buds of the Chinese rose fall before they bloom?
In the Aiwen Circle, some flower enthusiasts asked why the small buds of the Chinese rose in the Little Eden Garden fell before they bloomed. This phenomenon of buds falling before blooming is quite common in potted Chinese roses. What exactly causes it? The most common reasons are the following three.
1. Insufficient Fertilization
Insufficient fertilization is a common situation encountered by potted Chinese roses, especially with late-blooming and multi-branched varieties, which often lack fertilizer. This is influenced by the variety and is also closely related to our maintenance.
Usually, when the Chinese roses have not yet bloomed, we tend to manage them more diligently, applying pesticides and fertilizers effectively. However, once some varieties start to bloom, we often get busy admiring the flowers and overlook the varieties that are孕育ing buds.
If top dressing is not timely, and the potted Chinese roses need to produce a large number of buds, the nutrient consumption is significant. If the roses are not getting enough nutrients, the small buds will appear yellow and wither.
For multi-branched Chinese rose varieties, it is necessary to check and continue top dressing before the small buds open, ensuring that at least 90% of the buds show color before stopping fertilization. The Chinese roses with blooming flowers need care, but in fact, the ones with buds need even more attention.
2. Suffering from Drought
This year's weather is really unpredictable, with continuous rain and sudden jumps to 30 degrees Celsius. Our potted Chinese roses are very prone to drought in such weather.
For Chinese roses full of buds, if they suffer from drought, they may also shed their buds. Even though we water the buds when we notice them drooping, and they recover the next day, it is common to see a lot of yellow leaves and falling buds within three to four days.
This is because of the damage to the fine roots caused by drought. This kind of damage is irreversible and usually shows a delay in potted Chinese roses, becoming apparent within 2-4 days. Therefore, when it comes to watering, it really can't be taken lightly for even a single day.
3. Infected by Red Spider Mites
Red spider mites are not fatal to Chinese roses, but they can be very annoying. They suck the sap from the back of the rose leaves, causing damage to the leaves and affecting photosynthesis.
Insufficient photosynthesis in Chinese roses can easily lead to a lack of fertilizer. For potted Chinese roses full of buds, this may result in bud shedding.
This season is when red spider mites start to爆发, so it is important to ensure that the placement of potted Chinese roses is not too dense, to maintain good ventilation, and to use miticides appropriately for prevention.
Prevention is better than cure for red spider mites, as they reproduce very quickly and are difficult to eradicate once infected. Preventative measures include regularly spraying miticides such as Damulin or Jinmanzhi. Alternatively, comprehensive prevention and control can be carried out according to the methods introduced in the book "How to Grow Chinese Roses from Scratch."
