Chinese Rose Shoot Promotion Techniques
Comprehensively analyzing the essential conditions for promoting Chinese rose shoots, let's delve into some green plant care tips together.
In autumn, Chinese roses enter a rapid growth period, which is a perfect time for us to promote shoots in young Chinese rose seedlings. Not only for young seedlings, but also for Chinese roses with weak branches can be promoted in autumn, and the resulting shoots can produce very standard and beautiful flowers.
Essential Conditions for Chinese Rose Shoot Promotion
To ensure robust shoots in Chinese roses, we must ensure several prerequisites are met, otherwise, even if shoots are forced to grow, they won't be strong.
1. -- Sufficient Sunlight --
Chinese roses are strong sun-loving flowers that thrive in sunlight. Insufficient light will cause the roses to grow weak and slow, or even stop growing. No matter how much fertilizer is applied, they won't grow. Therefore, the first condition for healthy growth is to ensure ample sunlight, preferably full sun after autumn.
2. -- Sufficient Leaves --
If you want to promote shoots in young Chinese rose seedlings or weak-branched plants, the seedlings should first have plenty of leaves. If the rose seedlings were neglected in summer and are now bare, they are not suitable for shoot promotion because without leaves for photosynthesis, the roses will find it hard to grow robustly. First, new buds and leaves should be grown before considering shoot promotion.
3. -- Sufficient Fertilization and Watering --
For thick shoots to develop in Chinese roses, adequate fertilization and watering are indispensable. If nutrients are insufficient, even new buds will be weak. Therefore, before promoting shoots, sufficient long-acting fertilizers should be applied, such as fermented organic fertilizers or slow-release fertilizers.
During the shoot promotion process, fast-acting water-soluble fertilizers should be used consistently, once a week. A compound fertilizer or "Flower More 1" can be diluted 800-1000 times and applied to the roots.
4. -- Preventing Diseases and Pests --
During the shoot promotion process, it is also important to prevent diseases and pests, especially thrips. Thrips can cause severe damage in autumn. If thrips are not controlled in time, the new shoots of Chinese roses can be eaten, causing the growth of shoots to stagnate or fail to emerge. To prevent thrips, insecticides should be sprayed every 10-15 days. When thrips are detected, it is recommended to spray insecticides for two consecutive evenings to maximize thrip control.
Chinese Rose Shoot Promotion Techniques
For weak-branched Chinese rose plants, the common method to promote shoots is branch pressing. This means pressing the branches of the Chinese rose to a horizontal position and securing them. This method breaks the apical dominance of the plant, allowing nutrients to flow back to the basal buds and promoting the germination of basal shoots. (As shown in the diagram below)
When pressing branches to promote shoots, there are two points to note: first, all branches should be pressed to a horizontal position. When pressing, it is not enough to press only some branches, as the unpressed part will continue to maintain its apical dominance, quickly sprouting new buds, which is not conducive to shoot germination.
The second point is to control the growth of new buds on old branches. After pressing, the buds on the branches may continue to sprout. To promote the germination of new shoots, we need to control the growth of new buds on old branches to avoid nutrient competition that could affect shoot germination.
