How to plant tulip bulbs to bloom during the Spring Festival

Compared to the knowledge of how most people plant tulip bulbs to bloom during the Spring Festival, let's take a look together!

Tulips are not only used for courtyard beautification but can also be grown in pots, blooming during New Year's Day or the Spring Festival to decorate the festival environment.

The maintenance methods for potting tulips are as follows:

(1) Selecting bulbs

When purchasing tulip bulbs, be sure to choose those that have undergone low-temperature treatment to ensure blooming on schedule; otherwise, they will not bloom during the Spring Festival. The bulbs should be as large as possible, with bright outer skin membranes indicating full buds and large flowers. Also, follow the methods introduced for outdoor cultivation of tulips to remove the outer skin membrane and disinfect the bulbs.

(2) Soil

Use a mixture of peat, vermiculite, and garden soil in equal parts to create potting soil, as long as it is loose and breathable. Also, follow the methods introduced for outdoor cultivation of tulips to disinfect the soil.

(3) Planting

Plant the bulbs when the temperature stabilizes between 5-10°C (usually from late October to November in the Yangtze River region). The planting depth should be 1-2 times the height of the bulb. Water thoroughly and place in a well-ventilated, shady area. Generally, numerous roots over 5 cm long will emerge in about 10 days.

(4) Temperature and lighting

Once the plant's root system has developed well, move the pot indoors. The optimal temperature for tulip growth is 15-18°C. When the temperature drops to below 5°C, growth stops, so when the nighttime temperature drops below 10°C, it is necessary to cover the pot with plastic film for insulation or heating, while also ensuring ventilation. At this time, a diluted calcium nitrate fertilizer can be applied.

(5) Humidity

Keep the relative humidity of the air no higher than 80%. With careful maintenance, tulips can bloom on schedule before the Spring Festival.

(6) Bulb harvesting and storage

When one-third of the above-ground stems and leaves have withered, dig up the bulbs promptly. After harvesting, remove the old, damaged mother bulbs, withered branches, and residual roots. Dry the bulbs and disinfect them to reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests during storage. Store the bulbs in a cool place, and they will still germinate when the temperature is appropriate in the fall, blooming again in the following spring.
