Rose bushes surviving winter
Compared to the experience most people have with rose bushes, surviving winter (experience from Liaoning horticulturists), keep reading on!
No doubt, horticulturists in the Northeast are as concerned about rose bushes surviving winter as I am. This spring, I discovered and developed a fondness for rose bushes, and from spring to autumn, I purchased over a dozen varieties, including climbing and shrub roses, all planted in the ground. Some climbing roses grew over 2 meters tall, while some shrub roses remained as thin as chopsticks, so there are not many results yet.
Now, the urgent task is how to ensure that the rose bushes planted in the ground in the Northeast can survive the winter safely. I have searched many posts online about this topic and now I will share a method with everyone, which was told to me by a local horticulturist.
Rose flowers are not afraid of frost but are very susceptible to wind, and once the branches lose water, they will die:
For shrub roses, the method is: after winter begins, prune the branches, leaving them no higher than 40 to 50 centimeters. It's fine if they are a bit taller. Add more soil around the base of the rose bushes, cover them with straw or sawdust, and sprinkle some loose soil on top for insulation.
For climbing roses, gather the branches with a rope and wrap them with海绵 (sponge), straw mats, or green insulation plastic. Don't wrap them too tightly on top, leaving an air vent. Cover the vent with old clothes, towels, or something similar to prevent snow from getting inside. Insulate the roots the same way as for shrub roses.
Everyone should note that it is absolutely forbidden to cover the rose bushes with plastic from top to bottom. The reason is that plastic retains moisture, and when the sun shines in winter and it gets cold and warm, condensation will form on the rose branches inside the plastic, potentially freezing and killing the roses. I am from Fushun, Liaoning, and horticulturists in the Northeast can adjust this method according to their own geographical location.
