Hydrangea Propagation Methods

Today's post is about the experience of plant propagation, specifically focusing on hydrangeas. Let's follow the editor to learn about the propagation methods of hydrangeas!

The propagation methods for hydrangeas are actually quite conventional, with division, layering, and cutting being the main techniques. Among these, cutting is the most favored by plant enthusiasts, and the reasons are not hard to guess, haha! Let's talk about each method in detail.

Propagation by Cutting: Starting from before the萌芽 in February, cuttings can be made (enthusiasts can also try in other seasons, as surprises often come after trying). Choose semi-woody branches about 20 centimeters long, remove the lower leaves, and if there are flower buds, cut them off as well. The suitable temperature for cutting is between 13-18°C, and roots will form in about 15 days. Some enthusiasts also do water cuttings, and they have also rooted.

Division Propagation: It should be done before the early spring when the buds start to sprout. Separate the rooted branches from the mother plant and plant them directly in pots. Do not overwater and keep them in a semi-shaded place. Once new buds have sprouted, transfer them to normal care.

High-pressure Propagation: It is done when the buds start to move. After 30 days, it can grow. In the following spring, cut it off from the mother plant, transplant it with soil, and it can bloom in the same year. The specific operation is simple: strip a circle of bark from the branch and then wrap it with peat or other soil, as shown in the picture below.

Hydrangea Planting Tips: Potted hydrangeas usually use pots of 15-20 centimeters. After the plants sprout in spring, make sure to water them sufficiently to keep the leaves from wilting. During the flowering period from June to July, ensure adequate fertilization, applying fertilizer once every half month or using 'Huiyou' 21-7-7 acid fertilizer. In the strong summer sunlight, provide some shade to extend the viewing period. After flowering, remove the flower stems to promote new branches. Flower color is affected by soil pH, with acidic soil producing blue flowers and alkaline soil producing red flowers. Repot every spring and prune appropriately to maintain a beautiful shape.
