Biyu, also known as豆瓣绿 (Douban Green) or 椒草 (Chili Grass), is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant of the Pepper Family. It is a small green plant that is particularly suitable for placing in offices, coffee tables, or on some antique shelves for display. Because of its elegant color, it adds a touch of freshness to the living room. How to care for Biyu is something many gardening enthusiasts want to know. Biyu prefers a warm and humid semi-shaded environment. The optimal growth temperature is around 25℃, and the minimum should not be lower than 10℃. It does not tolerate high temperatures and requires higher humidity in the air, avoiding direct sunlight; it likes loose and fertile soil with good drainage.
Water: Prefers moisture, needs more watering during the growing season from May to September, and should be sprayed or watered on the leaves when it's hot to maintain higher humidity, keeping the leaves clear and green.
Fertilizer: Fertilize once a month until overwintering.
Soil: Requires loose, fertile, and well-drained soil, which can be mixed with river sand, loam, and decomposed leaf soil.
Temperature: Prefers warmth, with an optimal growth temperature of around 25℃, and the overwintering temperature should not be lower than 10℃.
Light: Avoids direct sunlight and grows well in semi-shaded areas.
Diseases and Pests: This plant has few diseases and pests. Overly moist soil can cause leaf spot and stem rot, occasionally affected by scale insects and snails, which should be treated in a timely manner.
Pruning and Propagation: New seedlings should be pinched at about 10 cm tall to increase the number of branches, making the plant fuller and more valuable. Pruning of large plants is generally determined by their growth, cutting off the excessive branches which can be used as cutting material, easily rooting, and can be inserted into clean river sand or vermiculite, or directly into sandy soil. Propagation can also be done by leaf cuttings and division. The general propagation temperature required is between 20-25℃, leaf cuttings need to have petioles, inserted vertically or slightly obliquely into river sand, with a depth of 1/4-1/3 of the petiole, keeping the matrix moist and higher humidity, and it will root and produce adventitious buds in 2-3 weeks. The small buds can be transplanted after they grow a bit larger.
