Method of reproducing Freesia
Do you know these? Here are the details about the reproduction of Freesia, specifically the methods used:
Freesia reproduction generally involves sowing or dividing corms. Sowing is mostly done in autumn, with seeds germinating in about 2 weeks, and the resulting seedlings taking approximately 3 to 4 years to bloom. Corms can be separated from the stem after flowering, and they are white and droplet-shaped.
【Method of dividing corms】
Indoor potted plants usually plant corms in early September. It is recommended to use a terracotta pot with a diameter of about 20 centimeters that has good breathability. Healthy large corms should be selected, and before planting, they should be soaked in a solution of 500 to 800 times the concentration of carbendazim or thiophanate-methyl for 1 to 2 hours. Each pot can plant 5 to 7 corms of different varieties to enhance the ornamental effect. You can have one variety per pot or multiple varieties in one pot.
After planting, cover the soil with 2 to 3 centimeters, water thoroughly, and place the pot in a shady place. Seedlings will start to emerge in about 15 days. Once the seedlings emerge, the pot can be moved to sunlight for care. Before frost, move the pot to a sunny room indoors, keeping the room temperature between 10℃ and 18℃. During the growing period, the potting soil should be kept moist, and a dilute soybean cake solution should be applied every two weeks. Freesia is relatively tolerant to fertilizer; if the fertilization and watering are appropriate, the flowers will be larger and more fragrant. It will bloom in about 10 to 12 weeks, during which the temperature should be controlled between 8℃ and 10℃, watering should be moderately controlled, and fertilization should be stopped to extend the blooming period. After flowering and dormancy, once the leaves dry up, the corms should be promptly removed and stored. After harvest, store at 25℃ for 3 months, then move to 13℃ for 1 month until planting.
The corms of Freesia are similar to lily bulbs and can be stored at a low temperature of -2℃ for an extended period. They can be planted in greenhouses at any time. It usually takes 40 to 50 days from planting corms to flowering. It can be planted according to the needs of the flower market for long-term (G-Y) fresh cut flowers. If you want it to bloom during the Spring Festival, you can plant in pots in early December. If you need it to bloom during the Labor Day, plant in early March. The stems of Freesia are thin and weak and prone to falling over, so support stakes need to be set up when potting. After the flowers fade, gradually reduce watering, and when the stems and leaves wither, stop watering and dig out the corms, allow them to dry for a short period, and then store them at low temperatures.
I hope the detailed introduction to the method of reproducing Freesia shared above is clear to you now.
