When is the best time to plant lilies and what are the planting methods and timing?

When is the best time to plant lilies?

A small tip for life, introducing when it's best to plant lilies and the experience of lily cultivation and timing in the aspect of green plant maintenance. Let's learn about it together.

Lilies have large, colorful petals, various breeds, and a rich fragrance. In recent years, they have become increasingly popular among flower enthusiasts. However, many enthusiasts are always confused about when to buy lily bulbs. Some buy a pile of bulbs in the scorching summer, only to find that many of them fail to bloom after planting.

Spring is the best time to buy bulbs. It is recommended to buy OT series bulbs, which have a pleasant fragrance and can bloom every year!

In which month should lilies be planted?

The planting of lilies depends on the variety. If you buy flowering lilies for the Chinese New Year, the bulbs are usually not reusable after the flowers are finished, as it's hard to get them to bloom again. If bought in early spring, February to March is the best planting period. If you have your own naturally cultivated bulbs that haven't been refrigerated, they are usually planted in autumn, grow roots in winter, and sprout in spring.

Next, let me introduce the process of planting lily bulbs to you!

1. Selection of Bulbs

No matter what kind of bulbous flowers, the bulbs must reach a certain size to grow and bloom normally. This is also true for lily bulbs, which are sized by circumference. Generally, commercial bulbs are mostly in three sizes: 14-16, 16-18, and 18-20. The larger the bulb, the more flowers it will produce.

Compared to other bulbous flowers, lilies are the least likely to be deceived by merchants due to size issues.

2. Selection of Pots

The material of the pot has little effect on the growth of lilies. Ordinary plastic or gallon pots are fine, cheap, and breathable. The main issue is the size, height, and width of the pot, all of which must be sufficient. A height of more than 15 cm is best, and the width depends on the number of plants. Generally, a pot with a diameter of 22-24 cm can accommodate three plants (of course, ground planting is better).

3. Selection of Soil

Mainly using peat or decomposed leaf soil, and it's also necessary to ensure certain breathability and water permeability. Therefore, we need to add some substances to the soil to achieve these points, such as clean coarse river sand, diatomaceous earth particles, perlite, etc. You can also place some broken tiles or ceramsite at the bottom of the pot. As a bulbous flower, lilies can tolerate soil with poor water retention, otherwise, it's easy to cause bulb rot.

4. Planting and Watering

After selecting the soil and pot, plant the bulbs with the bud pointing up. When covering with soil, just expose a little bit of the bud tip. After planting, water thoroughly and place in a well-ventilated area. Usually, water when the pot feels light, and rainwater or river water is the best. If using tap water, it's best to let it sit for 1-2 days before use.

But rice washing water must be decomposed before use, and it should not be watered every day. Like fertilizer, rice washing water contains many nutrients, and if watered frequently, it can easily burn the plant.

5. Selection of Fertilizer

There's not much to say about this. During the growing period, mainly use nitrogen and potassium fertilizer, and during the bud formation period, mainly use phosphorus and potassium fertilizer (monopotassium phosphate and Huaduo No. 2 are the best choices).
