Attention Points for Repotting Azaleas
As a representative plant of acidic soil, the repotting operation of azaleas directly affects root development and the quality of flowering. This article analyzes four core steps to help gardening enthusiasts master the scientific repotting method, allowing the delicate azaleas to thrive in a fresh soil environment.
One, Core Elements of Potting Soil Preparation
1.1 Soil Type Continuity
Azalea roots are sensitive to the soil environment and require the continuation of the original pine needle soil matrix. It is recommended to mix the soil in a ratio of pine needle soil: peat soil = 7:3, maintaining a slightly acidic environment with a pH value of 4.5-5.5.
1.2 Scientific Addition of Base Fertilizer
Add 15g of bone meal + 10g of decomposed sheep manure per liter of matrix, mix well and let it sit for 3 days to activate microorganisms. Avoid using unfermented organic fertilizers to prevent root burn.
Two, Key Steps in Plant Handling
2.1 Water Control and Pot Removal Techniques
Stop watering 5 days in advance to allow the potting soil to contract, insert bamboo stakes along the pot wall to assist in separation. When inverted, support the soil ball with the palm to avoid breaking the main stem.
2.2 Fine Root Treatment
Remove 30% of the compacted old soil, then use a disinfectant scissors to cut the aging roots at a 45-degree angle. Retain the white new fibrous roots and apply wood ash after cutting to promote wound healing.
Three, Standard Planting Operations
3.1 Drainage Layer Construction
Use a ceramic pot with a 3cm layer of broken tiles at the bottom, covered with a 2cm layer of coarse sand, to form a stepped drainage system, preventing waterlogging and root rot during the rainy season.
3.2 Planting Depth Control
Keep the surface of the original soil ball 2cm below the pot rim and compact the soil in layers when filling. Water the roots in three installments to ensure complete soil penetration.
Four, Fine Management During the Acclimatization Period
4.1 Water Management Rhythm
Spray to moisten for the first 3 days, then start to water when the soil is dry on the 4th day. Use the pot-lifting method to determine: water thoroughly when the weight is reduced by 1/3.
4.2 Environmental Control Key Points
Maintain an environment with scattered light at 18-25°C and humidity above 65%. After 20 days, apply a 0.1% potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer to promote the growth of new roots.
After scientific repotting, azaleas can see new buds sprouting in about 40 days. It is recommended to update the matrix every spring, combined with regular application of ferrous sulfate, which can effectively prevent chlorosis and extend the ornamental period of the plant to 8-10 years.
