The Cultivation Method of Winter Roses
Winter is a crucial stage in the growth cycle of roses, and reasonable maintenance measures directly affect the quality of blooming in the following year. Considering the differences between the cold climate in the north and the damp and cold environment in the south, it is necessary to master scientific protective techniques to help roses survive the winter safely.
Key Points of Winter Management
Optimization of Plant Form
After the beginning of winter, implement shaping pruning: prioritize the removal of intersecting branches, withered and yellow branches, and weak and diseased branches, retaining 3-4 main stems to form a skeletal structure. Use a garden-specific剪 (pruning shears), keeping the cut at a 45-degree oblique surface, and immediately apply sulfur powder after pruning to prevent infection. In the southern region, some new buds can be retained, while in the north, it is recommended to prune completely.
Temperature Control Plan
Potted plants are advised to be moved to an indoor environment of 5-10℃, while for ground-planted plants, implement triple protection: heap 30cm of soil at the base to form an insulating layer, wrap the outer layer with breathable cotton felt, and cover the outermost layer with waterproof woven fabric. When the temperature drops below -5℃ at night, a temporary windbreak shelter can be set up, which should be dismantled promptly after sunrise to ensure ventilation.
Water Management Strategy
Adopt the "dry-wet cycle method": after the top 3cm of the soil is completely dry, choose the noon period to water thoroughly with 20℃ warm water along the edge of the pot. Use the bamboo stake test method to judge the humidity and avoid waterlogging that causes root frostbite. Accumulated water in the pot should be poured out promptly during rainy or snowy weather.
Light Enhancement Measures
Indoor maintenance should be placed near a south-facing window, ensuring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In addition, rotate the pot 180 degrees weekly to evenly expose the plant to light. During smoggy weather, use full-spectrum grow lights to supplement light for 2-3 hours daily, keeping the lights at a distance of 50cm to prevent burns.
Response to Special Situations
If frostbite is found on the branches, cut immediately to the healthy part and apply a healing agent to the cut. In case of extreme low temperatures, temporarily cover with double-layer shade nets and use ground heating cables to maintain root temperature. Spray a lime sulfur mixture before spring to prevent diseases and pests.
Through systematic winter management, not only can the roses survive the winter safely, but it can also promote nutrient accumulation, laying the foundation for explosive growth in spring. Regularly observe the plant's condition and flexibly adjust maintenance details to keep the roses in good活力 (vitality) during the cold season.
