What's wrong with the winter jasmine not blooming?
As an ornamental plant in early spring, jasmine should bloom golden flowers in early spring, but many flower lovers find that their plants never see flower buds. This article will systematically analyze the reasons why the jasmine does not bloom from the perspectives of plant physiology, maintenance and management, and provide scientific solutions. 1. Nutritional imbalance leads to obstruction of flower bud differentiation 1.1 Imbalance of nitrogen and phosphorus ratio When there is too much nitrogen (>3.5%) and insufficient phosphorus (<0.3%) in the soil, the plant will continue to undergo vegetative growth. According to experimental data, for every 1% increase in nitrogen fertilizer amount, the flowering rate decreases by 12%. It is recommended that during the flower bud differentiation period from September to October, bone meal or potassium dihydrogen phosphate (concentration of 0.2%) be buried along the edge of the pot and sprayed with foliar spraying. 1.2 The lack of trace elements and boron will directly affect the development of pollen tubes, and the lack of magnesium will lead to a decrease in leaf photosynthetic efficiency. The soil environment can be improved by supplementing slow-release fertilizer containing trace elements (N-P-K=5-10-5) every month and combining with EM bacterial fertilizer. 2. Improper light management affects flowering 2.1 Experiments with insufficient light intensity show that the flowering rate of plants with daily light less than 4 hours is only 18%. It is recommended to adopt the "stepped filling light method": ensure direct light for 5 hours in winter, receive full spectrum illumination in the morning, and use a sunshade net to filter strong light at noon to maintain the illuminance of 20,000 - 30,000 Lux. 2.2 The photoperiod disorder is a short-day plant and needs to maintain a dark environment for more than 13 hours a day after the autumnal equinox. Avoid light exposure at night and use black shading cloth to cover plants between 17:00 and 8:00. 3. Pruning technology determines the quality of flowering 3.1 Post-flowering pruning timing Trim within 7 days after flowering, retaining 3-4 pairs of bud eyes. The length of old branches shall not exceed 15cm, and the length of new branches shall be 8-10cm. Note that the cutting should be 0.5cm away from the bud eye and angled at a 45° angle to avoid rainwater accumulation. 3.2 The modeling pruning technique adopts the "three-cutting method": one is to cut the cross branches, the second is to cut the inner branches, and the third is to cut the long branches. 1/3 of the new branches are reserved as flowering mother branches every year, and aluminum wire is used to shape the natural hanging branch shape. 4. Key points of collaborative management of water and fertilizer 4.1 Precise irrigation controls soil moisture to maintain 40%-60% in spring and autumn, and increase it to 50%-70% in summer. Adopt the "see dry, see wet" method, and pour water thoroughly after 2cm of topsoil is dry. Control water to 30% humidity in winter to promote flower bud dormancy. 4.2 A scientific fertilization plan establishes a "three-stage fertilization system": applying balanced nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (15-15-15) during the germination period (February), changing to high-phosphorus fertilizers (10-30-10) during the budding period (March), and supplementing organic fertilizer (decomposed sheep manure: vermiculite =3:1) after flowering.
Through systematic maintenance and management, combined with the three core measures of light regulation, nutrient supply, and pruning control, the flowering volume of jasmine flowers can be increased by 3-5 times. It is recommended that flower lovers establish a maintenance log, record plant growth data, and gradually optimize management plans.
