Beginner's Suggestions for Growing Succulents

This article provides detailed suggestions and precautions for beginners growing succulents, as well as some small green plant maintenance tips. These are very useful knowledge points, so it's recommended to save them for future reference!

Most flower enthusiasts, like myself, start with the adorable succulents as their first pot plant. Succulents have always captured the hearts of countless flower enthusiasts with their cute appearance. However, succulents are not as easy to care for as many might think. It can be challenging for beginner flower enthusiasts to grow them well. Today, I'm here to share five of my own experiences in caring for succulents, hoping to help everyone!

1. Soil

Succulents prefer to grow in dry, well-draining, and loose sandy soil because such soil has good drainage and aeration, which is more suitable for succulent growth. Also, when you buy succulents from the flower market, it's best to change the potting soil on a warm day, as the soil that comes with it is not very suitable for healthy growth.

2. Temperature

Ensuring a suitable growth temperature is also very important when caring for succulents. Generally, a temperature range of 15-25 degrees Celsius is best for their growth. As long as the temperature does not exceed 35 degrees or drop below 5 degrees, most succulents will not enter a dormant period and will continue to grow normally.

However, even with the right temperature, it's also important to ensure good ventilation when caring for succulents. Otherwise, they may become listless and unattractive when grown in a stuffy environment for a long time.

3. Water

Succulents have thick leaves with some water storage capacity, so they don't require much water. Generally, you can water them relatively frequently in spring and autumn, about once a week, every two weeks in summer, and once a month in winter. Flower enthusiasts should also summarize their watering experience based on the actual condition of their succulents. Signs of dehydration, such as withered or soft leaves, indicate it's time to water thoroughly.

4. Light

Succulents also have certain requirements for light. They enjoy sunny weather, and if you can ensure they get more than 8 hours of adequate sunlight every day, your succulents will grow very beautifully. So, during spring, autumn, and winter, you can simply place them on a south-facing balcony or windowsill.

However, in summer, you need to provide some shade for them because too much sunlight can burn their leaves, affecting their healthy growth or even threatening their life.

5. Regularly Change Potting Soil

When choosing a pot for growing succulents, you can opt for something small and exquisite but with good drainage and aeration, like terracotta or clay pots. Enthusiasts with the means can also use purple sand pots, which offer better aeration and visual appeal.
