Can Xiangye trees be propagated by cuttings?
Sharing the knowledge of whether Xiangye trees can be propagated by cuttings, as well as the season and methods for propagating Xiangye trees. It's a very useful tip, recommended for bookmarking!
Common propagation methods for Xiangye Pelargoniums include cuttings, hybrid seed sowing, and tissue culture. However, hybrid seed propagation and tissue culture are costly, complex, and time-consuming, making it difficult to rapidly produce a large number of seedlings. Although cutting propagation maintains the characteristics of F1 hybrid seeds and has significant advantages such as uniform growth, fast propagation speed, and low cost, the current success rate of cutting propagation for Xiangye Pelargoniums is low. However, there are no records in existing technologies on how to improve the survival rate of cuttings.
1. Establish a Xiangye Pelargonium mother plant cutting field in a well-ventilated and water-resistant plastic greenhouse. Inside the greenhouse, set up a layer of manually operable shading net with a shading rate of 50%. The ground of the greenhouse is covered with black ground cloth. The mother plants are planted in 15.5L pots, with a density of 2500 pots per mu. The growing medium is a mixture of coconut fiber, peat, and perlite in a volume ratio of 2:1:0.5; 3kg of Aibei 18-6-12乔木与灌木GAL-XEONE controlled-release fertilizer is applied per cubic meter of the medium, mixed evenly with the medium.
2. Inside the mother plant field, the maximum temperature in summer is below 35°C, and the minimum temperature in winter is above 6°C. The strongest light intensity is controlled between 30000-35000Lx. In spring and autumn, the shading net is opened for appropriate lighting before 10:30 AM and after 4:30 PM; in summer, before 9:30 AM and after 5:30 PM. Watering is done every 2 days during the growth period from March to October, thoroughly each time, and stopped during rainy days. During the dormant period from November to the following February, watering is done every 4 days. Fertilization is applied every 2-3 months, stopping during the dormant period from November to February.
3. Before planting, place the trays filled with a medium (a mixture of coconut fiber, peat, and perlite in a volume ratio of 3:1:0.5) on the seedbed. Two hours before planting, disinfect the medium with a 1000-fold solution of methylthiophanate.
4. In early March, use a pruning shear with a pointed tip to cut the tender stems from the mother plant field as cuttings. Each cutting should have one leaf and one bud, and all cuttings must have a leaf. The lower cut of the cutting should be smooth. After cutting the cutting from the mother plant, keep it moist with a clean damp cloth, then soak it in a 1000-fold solution of methylthiophanate for 5 minutes, dry slightly, and then dip the base in a 500ppm rooting hormone solution (the weight ratio of naphthylacetic acid to indole-3-butyric acid is 3:1) for 5 seconds. Plant the cuttings in a 50-hole forest tray, one cutting per hole, with the cutting inserted 1cm deep into the medium. Complete the cutting within 2 hours and immediately spray water, entering the maintenance stage.
5. Install a small plastic film arch greenhouse on the seedbed for insulation and moisture retention. The maintenance environment has a shading rate of 70%-80%, relative humidity of 80%-90%, daytime temperature of 20-28°C, and nighttime temperature of 15-23°C. On the 10th to 12th day after planting, callus appears at the base of the cutting, roots start to grow on the 15th to 18th day, and after the 35th to 40th day, when the roots fill the tray holes, start the acclimatization process. Reduce the shading rate to 50%-60% and the relative humidity to 50%-60%. First, open 1/3 of the plastic film for ventilation and humidity reduction, and after 3-4 days, open the entire plastic film. Then acclimatize for another 4-6 days to meet the seedling standard. Xiangye Pelargoniums require 42-50 days from cutting to mature seedlings, with a survival rate of 90.1%.
