How to Plant Strawberries
The editor will tell you how to plant strawberries and the related knowledge of the whole process of strawberry cultivation. Let's take a look together.
When planting strawberries, it is important to choose good varieties, such as Changhong No. 2 or 83-38. Usually, the survival rate is very high when planted in September to October. Before sowing, the seeds should be treated at low temperature, and the soil with good breathability and loose texture should be chosen for planting. When transplanting, it is necessary to take the original soil, and organic fertilizers can be used to supplement nutrients. Let's understand together from the aspects of strawberry variety selection and sowing, soil preparation, and planting treatment.
1. Variety Selection and Sowing
Varities such as 83-38 and Changhong No. 2 that bear fruit all year round can be chosen. Before sowing, wrap the seeds in clean gauze, wet them in water, and then put them in the refrigerator for cold storage at a temperature of 0℃ to 3℃, maintaining this low-temperature treatment for half a month to increase the germination rate. When sowing, mix the seeds with wood ash and then scatter them on the soil, sprinkle fine soil on the surface, water them, and cover them with plastic film, placing them in the sun for 20-30 days.
2. Soil Preparation
Use soil that is loose, well-ventilated, and fertile. If conditions permit, use humus soil from broad-leaved forests as the matrix, which has good water absorption and drainage. The conventional preparation method is to mix garden soil, river sand, and decomposed manure, and then sieve the mixture finely before use.
3. Planting Treatment
Choose healthy strawberry seedlings for planting, cut off the stolons and withered leaves, trim the roots to about 10 centimeters, leave 2-3 young leaves, and transplant with the original soil. Dig small holes in the prepared soil similar in size to the strawberry roots, gently place the strawberry seedlings in them, pat the soil flat, and water with oxygen-rich water that has been exposed to the sun. Raw water should not be used to water the strawberry seedlings as it contains chlorine.
4. Post-Planting Care
Temperature: The most suitable temperature for strawberry growth is about 20-25℃, and try to maintain the temperature above 15℃ in winter.
Fertilization: Strawberry varieties like 83-38 and Changhong No. 2 that bear fruit all year round will bloom and bear fruit multiple times a year, requiring sufficient nutrients to maintain growth, so it is necessary to strengthen fertilization management. In the seedling stage, nitrogen fertilizer should be mainly used to promote stolon growth; during the flowering stage, a large amount of nutrients are needed to promote flowering, mainly applying nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compound fertilizers; during the fruiting stage, applying more phosphorus fertilizer can increase yield, and some trace element foliar fertilizers should also be applied to supplement medium and trace elements, which can make the fruit sweeter.
Pruning: During the growing period, it is necessary to cut off the excessively vigorous stems of the strawberry seedlings to ensure good ventilation and light penetration. Old and yellow leaves should also be cut off in time to reduce nutrient consumption.
