Luwei flowers are plants that bloom from early spring to late autumn, with an abundant amount of flowers. Many people treat them as annuals, but in fact, they can be perennial if they can survive the hot and sunny summer.
Luwei flowers are very suitable for growing into small potted plants or for decorating rock gardens, and they can even be grown in rock crevices. If you want to grow Luwei flowers well, you must treat them as succulents, as they are a type of flesh-like plant. Given the right environment, they can grow well. They particularly enjoy cool and dry climates, and understanding their growth habits makes it easier to cultivate this plant.
The plant of Luwei flowers is relatively low, usually growing to about 10 centimeters. When they bloom, including their stems and flowers, they can reach 20 centimeters in height, making them very suitable for pot cultivation. The Luwei flowers we buy from the market are usually two or three plants in one pot, each with different colors, making them highly ornamental.
What is a Luwei flower?
To grow Luwei flowers well, you must provide them with soil that has better drainage and breathability, similar to planting succulents, by adding more coarse sand or particle soil to the soil. As long as you prevent root rot and increase aeration, half of the success in growing this plant is achieved. Especially in the cold winter, it is necessary to avoid getting wet in the rain, as it can easily cause the entire plant to rot.
1. Light
Luwei flowers particularly enjoy sunlight. In winter and spring when sunlight is not strong, they can be exposed to the sun as much as possible.
In summer and autumn when temperatures are high and sunlight is very strong, it is necessary to provide appropriate shading, especially when temperatures exceed 35 degrees, they should be shaded from noon to afternoon.
2. Soil
Luwei flowers require highly draining soil and are afraid of root rot. When watering, you should not frequently water the leaves and flowers (moisture on the leaves should evaporate quickly).
If flower friends in the south want to grow this plant, they need to add more coarse particle substrates to the soil. A mixture of common peat soil and perlite can be used, mixed with some coarse particles (volcanic rock, pumice stone, lightweight stone, red jade soil), with the ratio of peat soil, perlite, and coarse particles being 4:1:5.
3. Water
Luwei flowers are particularly drought-resistant and require less water. While ensuring sufficient sunlight, it is important to control watering. Do not add water to them until the soil is completely dry.
In the blooming season, if there is good ventilation and sufficient sunlight, the frequency of watering can be slightly increased. However, in late autumn and winter, when temperatures decrease, watering should be controlled.
