How to prune potted camellia flowers
As one of the top ten famous traditional flowers in China, camellia is favored by gardening enthusiasts for its elegant flower appearance and evergreen characteristics all year round. The pruning skills of potted camellia directly affect the flowering quality and plant shape. Mastering the correct pruning timing and method can make your potted camellia bloom new every year. 1. Golden time for camellia pruning 1. Principle of pruning after flowering According to the rule of flower bud differentiation, winter flowering varieties should be pruned immediately after flowering wither from February to March, and spring flowering varieties should be completed before mid-May. Special note: pruning in early spring will directly cut off the formed flower buds, resulting in no flowers to enjoy that year. 2. Special climate adjustment If the northern region encounters a cold spring, pruning can be postponed until the average daily temperature stabilizes at 15℃. Due to the warm climate in Lingnan, pruning work can be carried out immediately after flowers fade. 2. Advanced techniques for camellia pruning 1. Variety difference-pruning method The fast-growing type (such as eighteen bachelor's degree) can be re-pruned to 1/3 of the original branch, and combined with picking to promote lateral buds; the slow-growing type (such as hexagonal red) only needs to be lightly pruned to retain the advantages of the main stem. 2. The disease branch treatment standard found that withered branches and black spots branches should be cut flat to healthy parts immediately, and carbendazim solution should be sprayed after cutting. Wound healing agent must be applied to incisions exceeding 2 cm in diameter. 3. Modeling and pruning techniques The umbrella-shaped shape retains the central upright branch; the jungle style requires cultivating 3-5 main branches; the "removing the straight and leaving the oblique" pruning method is adopted for branches that are too dense to enhance ventilation and light transmission. 3. Scientific maintenance after pruning Avoid watering within 3 days after pruning, and apply potassium fulvic acid solution diluted 1000 times after the incision heals. After spring pruning, apply balanced nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (N-P-K=15-15-15), and increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizers after autumn pruning to promote flower bud differentiation. Rotate the flowerpot regularly to ensure uniform light reception.
By accurately grasping the pruning timing and techniques, and cooperating with appropriate maintenance measures, your potted camellia can not only maintain a beautiful plant type, but also double the flower volume. It is recommended to establish a pruning log to record the annual pruning time and plant response, and gradually form a personalized maintenance plan.
