The yellow peony is a deciduous shrub or sub-shrub, 1 to 1.5 meters tall, hairless throughout; the stem is woody, cylindrical, gray; the young branches are green, with persistent obovate scales at the base. The leaves are alternate, papery, bipinnately compound; the leaf blades are pinnately lobed, the lobes lanceolate, papery, entire or toothed, slightly powdery on the underside; flowers occur at the top of the branches or in the leaf axils, with yellow petals, obovate, sometimes with red margins or purple patches at the base; the follicles are leathery, containing several black seeds. It usually germinates in March, flowers from April to May, the fruit matures from September to October, and the leaves fall in November. The yellow flowers are the germplasm genes for breeding new varieties of peonies and peony relatives, scientifically valuable in horticultural breeding. The root bark is used as a medicine, as a substitute for white peony, treating diseases such as hemoptysis, lumbar pain, joint pain, and menstrual irregularities, with effects of clearing heat and cooling blood, dispersing blood stasis and relieving pain, and promoting menstruation.
