Peonies Planting Methods and Timing
This article provides you with knowledge about peonies planting methods, timing, and suitable locations for planting peonies. Let's learn about it together.
After entering autumn, many businesses start selling peonies, including experts who are also planting peonies. So, is it suitable to buy now that it's the season for planting peonies? Can we plant them? What are the techniques for planting? Today, Xiaoqi will tell you about it.
The normal planting time for peonies is around the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is relatively reliable. By this time, its leaves have almost all fallen off, the stems have stopped growing, and the flower buds have also fully differentiated. It is just in the stage of growing roots in autumn. When we buy, we usually purchase bare-root seedlings, with the bottom of the roots cut off. Therefore, after receiving the seedlings, we need to inspect the roots to ensure proper planting. If there are black spots on the root wounds, cut off the black parts, trim the long roots appropriately, and then plant them. There are two planting methods: potting or ground planting, and you can choose wisely.
1. Ground Planting
Ground planting is the most suitable for peonies, as they have a large area and strong cold resistance. After planting, just water it regularly, and it will bloom every year. When planting, dig a large enough hole, not too small. After the soil in the hole is loosened, place the peony in the middle. The connection between the roots and the stem should be a certain height above the soil surface, about five centimeters of soil covering the roots to prevent frostbite in winter. When planting, add soil to the hole and halfway through, pull up the plant with your hand to loosen the soil and fill the gaps with soil.
Then find a thicker stick, press the soil around firmly, add more soil, and press it again. This allows the soil to fully combine with the roots. Then cover the roots with soil, pile up about five to ten centimeters of soil, and water it. In autumn, it will quickly grow new roots and have a very good root system by winter. When spring comes, it will bloom wonderfully, and it can bloom again the following year. However, for ground planting, choose a location with high ground and no waterlogging, with at least half-day sunlight, especially some shade in summer to prevent direct exposure to the sun, ensuring good growth without issues.

2. Pot Planting
Peonies can be planted in pots, but it must be purchased in autumn because the roots grow in autumn. After planting, the roots will grow rapidly. In autumn, the roots will fill the pot, and it can bloom in spring. If purchased in other seasons, the plant may not grow roots and will directly bloom or grow leaves, consuming the nutrients from the old roots. Once growth and flowering are complete, the roots will be exhausted, the main stem may shrink back, and the plant may become weak or stop blooming in later stages.
When planting peonies in a pot, choose a larger pot. Place the plant in the middle, fill the sides with soil, lift the plant slightly to fill every root gap with soil, then press the soil around with a stick, cover the roots with a small soil mound in the middle, water thoroughly, and place it in a sunny location for regular care. In autumn, it will grow roots rapidly and fill the pot.
However, in autumn, if potting, the soil dries out very quickly, so it is important to water appropriately. Generally, when the soil is dry to a depth of one or two centimeters, water it thoroughly to ensure sufficient sunlight. In autumn, you can supplement with high-phosphorus and high-potassium fertilizers like "Flower多多二号" to promote root growth, rapid differentiation of flower buds, and increase cold resistance. After nurturing it through autumn, it can bloom beautifully in winter with low temperatures, and it will bloom again the following spring.
This is the introduction to the two methods of planting peonies: potting and ground planting. You can choose a suitable planting method. If you have a garden, it's best to plant it in the ground; if not, you can plant it in a pot. Choose your favorite variety. However, remember if you are in the southern region where winter temperatures are very high, do not plant peonies. They require low temperatures for vernalization, generally differentiating flower buds when temperatures are below ten degrees Celsius in autumn, otherwise they will not bloom. Planting peonies in the south will only result in enjoying the leaves, as they will not bloom.
