Peony Root Rot Control Program, Peony Root Rot Emergency Guide

What to Do When Peony Roots Rot

Peonies, as one of China's traditional famous flowers, have their blooming quality directly affected by the health of their roots. When the leaves start to wither and new buds stop growing, it often indicates an abnormality in the roots. This article systematically compiles four repair solutions and preventive measures for peony root rot, helping gardening enthusiasts effectively save precious plants.

Emergency Response to Root Abnormalities

Scientific Water Control Plan

Peony roots contain 75% water, and积水 for 24 hours can trigger anaerobic respiration. It is recommended to adopt the 'three-look' watering method: look at the surface soil (2 cm dry), the branches (new shoots slightly wilted), and the season (spring and autumn 3 times/week, summer morning and evening watering). Special tip: For potted peonies, it is suggested to use red clay pots with a 5 cm layer of ceramic stones at the bottom for drainage.

Precise Fertilization Strategy

Experimental data shows that peonies require an annual fertilizer ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the proportion of 3:6:6. Common fertilizer damage is shown by leaf tip burning, at which point the 'three-step fertilizer removal method' should be immediately implemented: 1) Continuous water flooding for 3 days; 2) Replace the top 5 cm of the substrate; 3) Apply EM bacterial solution to repair the soil. During the bud differentiation stage, it is recommended to use potassium dihydrogen phosphate (1000 times liquid) as a foliar top dressing to avoid root contact with concentrated fertilizer.

Systematic Disease Control

Root Rot Identification and Treatment

The pathogenic fungi (mainly Fusarium) invades through wounds, with typical symptoms being brown annular necrotic spots on the roots. It is recommended to wash the roots with hydrogen peroxide (3% concentration) and use metalaxyl (1500 times liquid) for root irrigation. Important tip: Pruning tools must be sterilized with fire, and diseased roots should be buried deeply.

Soil Improvement Project

The ideal growing medium for peonies should meet the following criteria: pH value of 6.2-6.8, EC value of 0.8-1.2 mS/cm, and organic matter content of ≥30%. It is suggested to add decomposed pine needles (15% proportion) every autumn to improve aeration and mix in rice husk charcoal (5%) to adjust the pH level. Potted peonies need a complete soil change every 2 years.

By implementing a four-dimensional repair system that includes water control, precise fertilization, disease prevention, and soil improvement, the survival rate of peonies with root rot can be increased to 82%. In daily maintenance, pay attention to the speed of new leaf expansion (normal 3 days/leaf) and regularly check soil moisture (maintain 40%-60%), which will allow peonies to bloom beautifully every year.
