Peony Pomegranate Cultivation Techniques "Key Points for Cultivating Peony Pomegranate"

Peonies Pomegranate Cultivation Techniques

This article brings you the experience of growing peonies pomegranates, the cultivation techniques of peonies pomegranates, as follows:

Peonies pomegranate is a rare variety among Chinese pomegranate species, integrating ornamental and edible uses. It is unique and is a gardening marvel in China and even the world. Its cultivation techniques are as follows:

1. Orchard Selection: Peonies pomegranate is adaptable and resistant to poor soil, and can be planted in mountainous or hilly areas with a soil pH between 4.5 to 8.2. However, sandy loam soil rich in organic matter, thick soil layer, and good drainage is preferable. If the soil is poor, large holes 0.8 meters long, wide, and deep should be dug, and manure and phosphate fertilizer should be applied inside the holes.

2. Planting Time and Density: In the south, planting usually takes place from December to March of the following year, while in the north, it can be done in March to early April. Plant about 100 plants per 667 square meters. The spacing between plants and rows is 2m x 3m.

3. Shaping: After planting the seedlings and when new shoots appear, select three strong new shoots that are evenly spaced about 10cm apart and growing in different directions to cultivate into main branches. All other buds should be removed. For the secondary branches that sprout on the main branches in the same year, due to differences in nutrition and growth position, they tend to grow too vigorously, affecting the growth of the main stem. These should be pinched off at 30cm to ensure the main branches grow in the required direction. This maintains the characteristics of "sparse on top, dense below, sparse outside, dense inside, sparse large branches, dense small branches," ensuring that the whole plant has light both inside and out.

4. Pruning: It is divided into summer pruning and winter pruning. ①Summer Pruning: Peonies pomegranate is sensitive to pruning. When pruning, focus on opening the canopy and thinning branches, using fewer heading cuts and reductions, and take summer pruning measures such as pinching, removing buds, and bending branches to facilitate the formation of a large number of leafy short shoots, which can form a large number of fruiting mother branches in the fall, ensuring many flowers and fruits the following year. ②Winter Pruning: Mainly involves cutting off those vigorous branches, dense columns, and diseased branches, and updating drooping branches after fruiting, usually completed around mid-January.

5. Thinning Flowers and Fruits: ①Thinning Flowers: In late May each year, when two types of flowers are distinguishable, manually remove the undeveloped bell-shaped flowers (trumpet-shaped flowers) and retain the fully developed cylindrical flowers (bottle-shaped flowers). ②Thinning Fruits: Mainly remove small fruits, diseased fruits, and late-stage fruits.

6. Fertilization and Water Management: ①Apply 2000 to 3000 kg of manure and 100 kg of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer mixed as a base fertilizer per 667 square meters. ②Apply fast-acting nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers before flowering, with 50 kg of urea per 667 square meters; ③During the full bloom period, spray 0.3% borax on the leaves to increase fruit setting rate; ④During the fruit expansion stage and fruit color change stage, apply 50 kg of multiple compound fertilizer per 667 square meters. Foliar sprays with 0.3% urea or 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate can also be used; ⑤Irrigation can be done before germination, after full bloom, and during fruit expansion, and can also be combined with fertilization.

7. Pest and Disease Control: Peonies pomegranate has fewer pests and diseases. The main pest and disease control measures include: ①Use 50% Thiram 500 times liquid to control dry rot disease; ②Early leaf drop disease: Use 50% methyl thiophanate 800 times liquid; ③Peach borer: Use 20% fenvalerate 2000 times liquid to spray on the leaves for control.
