Double-color Jasmine Cultivation Methods
Today's topic is the cultivation of double-color jasmine for home gardening. Here are the cultivation methods of double-color jasmine. Let's introduce it to netizens by the editor of the website.
Double-color jasmine, also known as mandarin jasmine,五彩茉莉 (five-color jasmine), and Surinam jasmine, belongs to the Solanaceae family and theBrunfelsia genus. It is an evergreen shrub with a height of 30-100 cm. Its native region is tropical America. The flowers start as deep blue when they first bloom, but within two to three days, the original deep purple pigments of the corolla gradually disappear due to the influence of factors such as sunlight and temperature, eventually turning pure white. Since the flowers on the same plant bloom at different times, with the earlier ones turning white and the later ones still deep purple, the bi-colored flowers bloom together like mandarin ducks, emitting a jasmine-like fragrance at the same time, hence the name "mandarin jasmine."
Double-color jasmine thrives in a sunny, warm, and humid climate and requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil. The suitable growth temperature is between 20-30°C. It enters a dormant state at 12°C, and the indoor temperature in winter should not be below 13°C. In East and North China, it is grown as a greenhouse pot plant, requiring well-drained, slightly acidic soil, with a growth temperature of 18-30°C. Indoor cultivation needs at least 4 hours of sunlight for abundant flowering. It enters dormancy at 12°C.
Key points for cultivating double-color jasmine are as follows:
① Mandarin jasmine prefers a warm, humid climate and is not cold-tolerant. It requires sufficient sunlight and well-drained acidic soil. It needs to overwinter indoors and be moved outdoors in spring.
② The growing medium can be a mixture of garden soil, leaf mold, and rice hull ash (1.5:1:0.5), with an appropriate amount of manure. When repotting in spring, prune the plant by removing old roots, dead branches, dense branches, and runty branches. Move it to the shade of a large tree in summer for cultivation.
③ Increase watering gradually after spring and water thoroughly every two days in summer. Sprinkle water on the leaves and surrounding environment appropriately, and reduce watering frequency in autumn. In winter, water once every 10 days. Excessive watering or excessive humidity indoors can cause leaf drop or root rot.
④ Apply a thin cake fertilizer (20%) every 10-15 days during spring and summer, and stop fertilizing in autumn to prevent new shoots from frost damage.
⑤ Propagation. a. Cutting propagation can be done between April and August by taking one-year-old branches, 8-10 cm long, which can root in about one month. Using the full sunlight spray method in summer results in a higher survival rate. b. Layering can also be used for propagation, by making a notch 15 cm from the tip of the branch, burying it in soil, and it can root in three weeks, with the seedlings ready to be transplanted after 50 days.
