Is it better to plant osmanthus fragrans 'Si Ji' or 'Jin Gui' at home?

The editor will answer the question of whether it is better to plant 'Si Ji' osmanthus or 'Jin Gui' at home, as well as related topics about the cultivation of 'Jin Gui' and 'Dan Gui' flowers suitable for courtyard planting. Next, the editor will introduce them.

With many osmanthus varieties, choose these "2 types" to plant, blooming all year round with abundant flowers and strong fragrance

Osmanthus, as an excellent variety of horticultural flowers, is deeply loved by the elders. Currently, the flower cultivation industry is divided into three main categories: the most popular are succulents, followed by flowering plants, and then woody flowers. Flowers like osmanthus and jasmine have a long history and are widely recognized by the public.

There are many varieties of osmanthus, with at least six or seven common varieties, not to mention some genetically improved or grafted ones. These include 'Jin Gui', 'Yin Gui', 'Dan Gui', 'Si Ji Gui', 'August Gui', and so on. There are so many varieties of osmanthus, and I have cultivated five varieties, of which only two are the best.

For potted osmanthus at home, it is recommended to choose 'Jin Gui' and 'Si Ji Gui'. Their blooming periods are staggered, allowing you to enjoy the flowers every two months. 'Si Ji Gui' blooms less frequently but with a strong fragrance that can be smelled from tens of meters away. It grows slowly and requires careful maintenance.

'Jin Gui' has more flowers and a large amount of bloom, with a generally pleasant fragrance. Its scent is stronger than that of jasmine and gardenia. It has a large plant form, is easy to care for, maintains green leaves all year round, and can be admired even when not flowering. It is shade-resistant, does not easily shed leaves, and has a high cost-performance. However, it blooms less frequently, only twice a year.

Is it better to plant 'Si Ji Gui' or 'Jin Gui' at home?

Currently, I have four osmanthus trees left at home, two 'Jin Gui' and two 'Si Ji Gui'. I think these two varieties are the best for home planting. They can easily survive the winter by moving them indoors, with no problems at all and not easily frostbitten. In contrast, 'August Gui' and 'Dan Gui' are prone to frostbite during the seedling stage and are not easy to cultivate.

Good cultivation of osmanthus relies entirely on experience. After a long period of cultivation, osmanthus naturally thrives. Beginners often encounter problems such as curling and wrinkled leaves, and the plants may not bloom. It is difficult to solve these problems. I would like to give you a suggestion based on my personal experience.

For the issues of non-blooming and curling leaves in osmanthus, solutions can be approached from these two aspects.

Firstly: Pruning branches

Osmanthus needs to be pruned and combed every year. Without pruning, the bloom is reduced by half. Based on my personal experience, the new branches that sprout are more likely to bloom, while old branches only have a few buds that bloom. Every spring, as soon as the temperature reaches above 18 degrees, you can start pruning, cutting off withered, broken, or injured branches.

When new branches grow out, these new branches from the current year can bloom in the same year. With more new branches, the number of osmanthus flowers will also increase accordingly.

Secondly: Water and fertilizer management
