The Grey-backed Azalea is an evergreen dwarf shrub with erect stems, slender young branches that are broom-like, yellow-brown, and densely covered with brownish-yellow scales. The leaves are nearly leathery, oblong, elliptical, oblong-lanceolate to oblong-ovate; the inflorescence is terminal, umbel-like raceme, the corolla is broadly funnel-shaped, bright rose, light purple to blue-purple, rarely white; the capsule is narrowly ovate, densely covered with scales. The flowering period is May to June, and the fruiting period is October.
