How to cultivate Lycoris

Today's sharing: Introduction to the cultivation of Lycoris and the planting techniques of green plants and flowers. Detailed content will be shared next.

Lycoris is not a type of garlic. It can be admired for its leaves in winter and flowers in autumn, making it an excellent perennial herbaceous flower. Although many people may not be familiar with Lycoris, the red variety is also known as the "Otherworldly Flower." Most people are probably more familiar with the Otherworldly Flower. Due to its high horticultural value, Lycoris is cultivated artificially in Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and other regions in China. So, how do you plant Lycoris? Let's learn about its planting methods using potted plants as an example.

1. Bulb Preparation

For potted Lycoris, it is generally recommended to use large bulbs that have grown in the field for 3 years and are capable of flowering, with a diameter of over 7cm. You can plant one bulb per pot or 3-4 bulbs in a large pot.

2. Potting Soil Selection

The potting soil for cultivating Lycoris should be fertile sandy loam, requiring fertile, moist, rich in humus, and good drainage. The growing medium can be prepared by mixing two parts of decomposed leaf soil, two parts of garden soil, and one part of sand, with the addition of a small amount of decomposed manure or directly using fertile garden soil as the potting soil. The pot should be a clay pot or purple sand pot with a diameter of over 15cm.

3. Propagation Methods

Mainly by dividing bulbs. During the dormant period or after flowering, dig up the plant and plant the small bulbs around the mother bulb. They can bloom in about one or two years. For large bulb types like the Amazon Lily and Fireball Lily, you can cut the large bulbs radially into eight to sixteen pieces and plant them in clean sand beds. They can grow into new plants in about three to four months.

4. Daily Maintenance

(1) Water and Fertilizer: During the summer dormant period, watering should be reduced, while in spring and autumn, it is necessary to keep the potting soil moist. During the growing season, apply a thin cake fertilizer water every half month. Lycoris prefers semi-shade, avoiding direct sunlight in summer, and should be placed in a semi-shaded area in spring and autumn. During the winter, strictly control watering and stop fertilizing.

(2) Light and Temperature: Ensure adequate light with a transparency greater than 60%. When the temperature exceeds 30°C, provide appropriate shading. When the minimum temperature at night is below 5°C, take measures to prevent frostbite.

(3) Shallow Cultivation and Weeding: Shallow cultivation and weeding should be combined with watering or fertilizing in summer. It should be shallow to avoid damaging the underground bulbs. During the leaf period, use hand-pulling to remove weeds, taking care not to damage the leaves.

5.挖球 (Digging Bulbs)

Choose a sunny day to dig up the bulbs when the soil is dry, remove the soil, slightly dry them, and then store them. Alternatively, after cutting off the leaves, you can place them in a greenhouse with soil to enter dormancy, maintaining a room temperature of 5°C-10°C, keeping the room dry with good air circulation to prevent bulb rot. After the flowers fade, cut off the残花 (remaining flowers).

6. Harvesting

The most suitable time for harvesting is the leafless period (May to September), with June being the best. Choose a sunny day to dig them up, taking care not to damage the bulbs. After digging, remove the soil and avoid washing with water. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible, within 3 days, and retain the fibrous roots.

In addition to potted cultivation, Lycoris can also be grown in the open field, in box cultivation, or hydroponically. With proper care, it can produce very beautiful flowers, with petals that are very thin and long, and a very beautiful degree of curvature.
