Clematis Summer Planting Methods
This article provides a detailed introduction to the common knowledge of flower cultivation, focusing on the planting methods of clematis in summer. Let's follow the editor to learn more!
Some flower friends have asked me to write an article on the summer planting (surviving the summer) of clematis. I seriously thought about it for a week and made a simple summary in the spirit of being responsible for everyone's clematis. The following content only represents my personal opinion, and if there is any inappropriateness, everyone is welcome to criticize and correct.
My planting experience is limited to the northern part of Zhejiang (Huzhou), with high temperature and humidity, and the climate is almost the same as Shanghai and Hangzhou. Most of the clematis are potted on the third-floor south balcony, almost all in ceramic pots, small ones less than one gallon, and large ones 50 centimeters. The medium is almost the same, peat + bamboo charcoal + particles (鹿沼土, pearl rock, etc.).
Principles: ensure moisture (G-Y), must be ventilated, stop fertilizing before the end of August, and prevent thrips.
First, we classify them by category.
1. The first category of varieties continues to grow in summer, with normal management. Pay attention to red spiders and thrips, and it's best to spray medicine once every half month. Long-petaled flowers should not be rained on, as long as new branches sprout, they can bloom and continue until autumn. Evergreen, Montana only grows branches. Never forget to water, as the varieties with fine roots will die if they are short of water. Example varieties: Long-petaled (Blue Bird, Pink Mac, Cecil). Evergreen (Spring Early Knowledge, Silver Coin, Apple Blossom). Montana (Pink Rose, Green Eye, Super Star)
2. The second category of varieties (including Utopia, Memories, Blessings). They bloom in large numbers in early spring,剪掉残花 after the flowers, and it's also okay to cut off the flowering branches. About a month after flowering, some new axillary buds will sprout, and if they develop well, they can bloom. The old leaves will turn brown. Starting in May, the temperature gradually rises, and June is the plum rain season in Jiangnan. If the medium is not breathable or the branches are deeply buried, it is prone to wilt disease. Pay attention to thrips and diseases on new branches. Example varieties: Pink Champagne, Bee's Love,仙女座, Crystal Fountain, Josephine, Wokin Beauty, Ice Beauty, Elsa, etc.
3. The third category of varieties. After the first batch of flowers, you can cut off all the flowering nodes. About a month later, new branches will bloom again. Example varieties: Italian series (Purple Cloud, Violet Star, Super Jack, Margaret Hunt). Marginate (Such as Gu, Duran,舞姬, Ayu)
4. F-series (excluding Utopia, Memories, Blessings), a peculiar summer dormant variety. After flowering, cut off the residual flowers, leave the branches and leaves to increase the evaporation of water, and prevent wilt disease. It's okay to be rained on, but do not fertilize. The manifestation of dormancy is that the leaves turn yellow and black. After dormancy, you can cut short the branches and remove the withered leaves. It is recommended to prune the branches around the end of August, because by this time, the F-series should wake up and bloom again. Example varieties: Little Green, Fantasy Purple, Ogasawara (X-J), Cassis
5. Avenue. It is recommended to lightly prune after flowering, cut off the flowering nodes, and new branches that sprout before the end of June can basically bloom again. Manage summer as the second category. Example varieties: Picardy, Cezanne, Parisian Style, Orla, Beer
Thrips can cause blackening of the tender buds of new branches. If you find that the new buds of clematis are charred black, excluding fertilizer damage, you should consider whether it is caused by thrips. Fertilizer damage is mainly black at the tip of the leaf, while thrips are black from the leaf to the petiole. I usually see thrips starting in July, but this year they appeared on the roses in May. Using drugs such as abamectin and dinotefuran can prevent them, and if they break out, you can spray the above drugs every three days for three times.
Flower friends, don't ask me which varieties belong to the first, second, or third categories, because there are too many varieties in each category. You can tell me the varieties you don't know the classification of, and I will answer which category they belong to. Thank you for your cooperation.
