Lavender Planting Time and Methods
This article provides an overview of the experience in planting lavender and the four main steps in the aspect of green plant cultivation. Next, the editor of this site will introduce to you.
The seedling industry is a market guided by the national policy. The sharp reduction in government investment and the failure to start ecological greening projects in a timely manner have caused the sales of seedlings to be very sluggish. Large greening companies mainly stock large-size seedlings in their own nurseries, which are scarce and in high demand in the market. This part of the seedlings remains strong in the market due to scarcity. Farmers who follow the trend are like retail investors in the stock market, blindly planting seedlings that are easy to saturate the market.
Lavender is a fragrant purple-blue flower. It has the same romantic sentiment as its place of origin. This flower, born in Provence, France, is surrounded by various romantic love stories. It is said that the appearance of this flower represents love and commitment, just like its flower language, waiting for love. This romantic lavender is now loved by more and more young people. If you love her, take her to plant lavender together!
1. Sowing Time:
In the north, it is generally sown in late February or March in spring for open-field cultivation, and large plants are beneficial for overwintering. It can also be sown in October, overwintered in a greenhouse, and planted in the following spring; in the warm southern regions, because winter is suitable for the growth of lavender, it is generally sown in October.
2. Germination Treatment:
Lavender seeds have difficulty germinating. To improve germination rate and seedling uniformity, the lavender seeds need to be treated before sowing. French lavender seeds are soaked in warm water for 12 hours, then soaked in a concentration of 25mg/kg of gibberellin solution at a temperature of 20-30℃ for 2 hours. Then, pour the seeds together with the water onto a dry towel to filter out the seeds.
After the seeds are slightly dry, place them in a cool and dry place for sowing. Narrow-leafed lavender seed coats are smooth and not easy to absorb water, so fine gauze paper should be used to grind the seeds first, then soak them in warm water for 12 hours, followed by soaking in a concentration of 25mg/kg of gibberellin solution at a temperature of 20-30℃ for 2 hours. Then, pour the seeds together with the water onto a dry towel to filter out the seeds. After the seeds are slightly dry, place them in a cool and dry place for sowing.
3. Sowing Techniques:
Sow when the surface of the seedbed is slightly dry and not muddy. Because lavender seeds are small, except for the hole tray that can barely use dot sowing, other seedling trays are not suitable for dot sowing but are suitable for broadcasting. When broadcasting, to ensure even seed distribution, mix the seeds with a certain amount of fine soil and fine sand according to the amount of seeds and the broadcasting area, then evenly sprinkle them into the seedbed. After that, to prevent the surface soil from becoming compacted and to help the seeds germinate, mix vermiculite and nursery soil or fine sand with nursery soil in a volume ratio of 2:1 to cover the seeds, with a thickness that just covers the seeds. After covering, sprinkle the seedbed thoroughly with a watering can again, and the germination period is about 14-25 days. Careful management and patience are required.
4. Seedling Raising Techniques:
Use the precision sowing method with a tray, and the matrix can be selected as a professional seedling-raising matrix. You can also prepare your own seedling soil, which is suitable for preparing according to the formula (nursery soil: sand: peat soil) = 4:2:1. After the soil is prepared, it must be disinfected first, which can be done by fumigation with formaldehyde, and steam disinfection can be used if conditions allow.
If the prepared soil is less, add multi菌灵 powder to it, which can also play a role in disinfection. During preparation, add an appropriate amount of mixed fertilizer such as farm manure or compound fertilizer and mix well. Then, load it into the seedling tray that has been placed, and fill the gaps between the trays and the gaps between the trays and the walkways with nutrient-rich soil to keep the trays stable and not easily dried out. Finally, water the seedbed thoroughly again to prepare for sowing.
5. Seedling Management:
Within the first week after sowing, there is no need to water because the temperature is not too high and the seedbed is relatively moist. About a week later, water can be sprinkled on the seedbed according to its dryness or moisture, preferably in the evening. Each time, try to water the seedbed thoroughly but without积水, and continue to cover the greenhouse until the seeds germinate. After the seeds start to germinate, water once a day to keep the seedbed moist to help the seeds germinate. After watering in the evening, cover the shed to increase temperature and humidity.
The next morning, when the temperature in the shed rises to about 25℃, promptly uncover and secure the two sides of the shed to facilitate ventilation and cooling. In the evening around 7 pm, when the temperature drops, water and cover the shed. At the same time, before and during seedling emergence, promptly remove weeds. When all the seedlings have emerged and have 2-3 sets of true leaves, the plastic shed can be completely removed, and the intensity of watering can be reduced according to the dryness or moisture of the seedbed. Because lavender has few diseases and pests, and the seedling stage has good ventilation and light conditions, and the seedbed is kept slightly moist, there is basically no occurrence of diseases and pests during the seedling stage, and there is no need for pest and disease management, but appropriate topdressing management should be carried out.
6. Transplanting Process:
When the seedlings grow to an average of 6-10cm, which is 2-3 months, they can be transplanted. Before transplanting, ventilation and hardening of the seedlings should be carried out. At this time, the roots have already penetrated the seedling tray, but as long as the seedling tray is watered to make the soil moist before transplanting, even if the roots have penetrated the seedling tray, it will not affect the transplanting. Whether in the south or the north, it is suitable to choose soil with good water retention and fertility for cultivation; before transplanting, prepare the transplanting land first; irrigation the land thoroughly first, then turn the soil after the weeds have emerged.
7. Management after Planting:
The seedling stage takes about 15-20 days. After the seedlings have recovered, water moderately according to the drought situation, about 4-5 times a year, combined with watering, apply 15 kilograms of phosphorus fertilizer and 10 kilograms of urea per mu, and promptly cultivate and weed. For the flower buds that appear before June 20th, they should be removed manually to promote healthy growth and branching of the plants, laying the foundation for high yield next year. For the old seedling plots, ensure that there are no weeds in the field, and water well for bud formation in early May, and water well for flowering in June. When lavender begins to sprout flower buds, spray 0.2% phosphorus acid hydrogen potassium solution once every half month until flowering, which can promote longer spikes, sturdy flower stems, bright flower colors, and prevent lodging, making the flowering uniform and beautiful.
Lavender is not heat-resistant. When the temperature is persistently above 38-40℃ in midsummer, the stems and leaves will turn yellow, and the plant growth and flowering will show adverse effects. Attention should be paid to drainage during the rainy season. In the north, there should be保温 measures in winter, and a layer of decomposed organic fertilizer should be laid before winter, and the soil should be covered with soil for insulation, and anti-freezing water should be poured before the soil freezes.
