Rhododendron, known as the "Western beauty in flowers," has always been a favorite of flower lovers for its beautiful flowers and unique colors. However, propagating rhododendrons has been a big challenge for many flower enthusiasts. This article introduces an efficient and simple rhododendron cutting method to help you easily grow a flourishing rhododendron!
Choose cutting timeThe best time for rhododendron cutting is in spring or autumn when the temperature is suitable for the growth of rhododendrons. Spring cutting should be done in March to April, and autumn cutting should be done in September to October.
Select healthy branchesSelect healthy rhododendron branches free from diseases and pests for cutting. Generally, branches with a diameter of 0.5-1 cm and a length of 10-15 cm are chosen. When cutting the branches, make sure to leave 2-3 leaves to facilitate photosynthesis after cutting.
Handle branchesSoak the cut branches in clean water for 2-3 hours to help them absorb water. Cut the lower end of the branches diagonally with a pair of scissors to increase the water absorption area. Soak the branches in a disinfectant solution (such as potassium permanganate solution) for 5-10 minutes to kill germs.
Cutting method1. Prepare the cutting substrate: Use well-draining sandy soil such as perlite or vermiculite. Mix the substrate evenly and fill it in a flower pot.
2. Cutting operation: Insert the processed branches into the substrate, with a depth of about 3-5 cm. Make sure to maintain a certain distance between each branch to avoid shading each other.
3. Watering and moisturizing: After cutting, water thoroughly to keep the substrate moist. Be careful not to directly splash the branches when watering.
Maintenance management1. Light: Rhododendrons prefer a semi-shaded environment. After cutting, place them in a location with ample diffused light and avoid direct sunlight.
2. Temperature: During the cutting period, maintain a room temperature of 18-25°C. Too high or too low temperatures will affect the growth of rhododendrons.
3. Watering: Keep the substrate moist but avoid waterlogging. In the early stage of cutting, you can increase the watering frequency. After the branches have rooted, gradually reduce watering.
4. Fertilizing: After cutting, when the branches have rooted, you can apply a small amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compound fertilizer to promote plant growth.
The new rhododendron cutting method is simple and easy to perform with high propagation efficiency. As long as you master the cutting skills and maintenance management, you will surely be able to grow a flourishing rhododendron! Let's get our hands dirty and try it together!
